New Irish Hymns is the title of a new album from first-ladies of celtic music Maire Brennan and Joanne Hogg (Iona) in collaboration with US singer Margaret Becker. Becker describes the album as a "dream project" in a news story on her website, saying it is "a lush well-orchestrated record that is comprised of new hymns with a Celtic influence". The album was recorded at Maire's home outside Dublin and also features appearances from players from Riverdance, the Prague Symphony Orchestra and Iona, whose Troy Donockley lends his pipe skills. Joanne and Margaret had sung before on a trip to Donegal, while Maire has featured on Iona albums in the past. The album is slated for an October release in Europe, followed by a US release to be announced.
Maire Brennan (Clannad) has recorded a duet with Ronan Keating to be included as the b-side to his next single, "The Way You Make Me Feel". The song is a remake of the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl's "Fairytale In New York". They've decided to change the lyrics in at least one please to appease their fanbases. Maire's recording of "Rose of Bethlehem" also appears on a new compilation called "One Silent Night" which brings together a number of female vocalists from the "christian music" scene and was released recently in the USA.
Booley has been asked to record a duet with Maire Brennan for a forthcoming compilation. V-Enna are due to release their debut album to the US market on September 26th. Fono and Delirious? will both play at Cornerstone on 6th July in the USA.
Formula 7 startwork on an EP over Easter. They say that if you likeRootjoose, U2, Ben Folds Five, Blur, or Semisonic you mightlike them.
Juliet Turner has been well received as support act to Brian Kennedy on his recent Irish tour. Juliet may be touring the UK with Maire Brennan in the first quarter of 2000, but this has not yet been confirmed as she is also due to start preproduction work on her next album around that time.
Having received much mainstream attention recently through her collaboration with Chicane which resulted in a hit single, Maire Brennan should release her next solo album through Word this autumn.
