Ogg Vorbis is a new type of audio file which is superior in a number of ways to MP3. Skinflowers are the first Britlinks-listed band to let us know that they've been exploring the format with some live recordings from their recent show in Harlow. The guys have a few more shows coming up later this month. Check out the gig guide for more details.
Skinflowers' Easter Monday concert at the new Mean Fiddler (formerly the LA2) in London is now available in full with stereo sound and high quality video through this link. The band continue to work on their second album.
Skinflowers have had to cancel their gig in Islington scheduled for later this month after some trouble with the venue management. But they're also able to offer free tickets to see them play at the Mean Fiddler (formerly LA2) in London on Monday 16th (Easter Monday). Simply e-mail the band if you'd like some tickets (address in band index).
Skinflowers have become the latest britlinks-listed act to get distribution through HMV. Their album Data In A Hurry, which was a former indie of the month on this site is now available through HMVs across the UK or through the stores' website. They've recently lined up a string of concerts, including one on Easter Monday which will be webcast live from the Mean Fiddler (formerly LA2) through www.meanfiddlerliveonline.com. More dates are also in the pipeline, including a show in Reading and several in Oxford.
A number of Britlinks listed artists have been getting some good mainstream press recently. Skinflowers' collaboration with The Chaos Engine at the Underworld in Camden recently got a positive review in Metal Hammer. Folk/world mag Dirty Linen have a review of Iona's Open Sky in their February/March issue, and Zuff's band Pesky Thomas got a glowing review in the Medway Standard.
Skinflowers have abandoned work on the two EPs they'd hoped to release this year, saying "the tracks ... started to make sense in a traditional album sort of way". As a result, they're working on a second album with the hope of releasing it in September through the same distributors as Date In A Hurry. There are a variety of MP3s of tracks old and new (including some very recent demos) now available on their website.
Secret Archives of the Vatican are reworking the track "Little Flower" from their Reformation album for inclusion on a compilation album being put together by besonic.com. This is the latest development in the band's successful relationship with the site.
Skinflowers are appearing on Mike Rimmer's show on UCB Cross Rhythms this week. The Northern Ireland based band formerly known as Street Level are now Lemon Twelve and will have an album out shortly. We're still looking for someone to help out with the labels section of the site (e-mail for more details).
Airstar is a new band featuring Harv and Prod of Flow-fame. The new band, whose music is apparently in the vein of Suzanne Vega, David Gray and Beth Orton, are beginning to make some live ventures, which can be found listed in our gig guide.
To follow-up from their Data In A Hurry album (a former Britlinks indie of the month), Skinflowers are planning to release two EPs over the coming months. The first to be released before Christmas, will head in the direction the band have been taking live with an "edgy, muscular, angry sound". The second EP, to be released before the start of next summer will pick up some of the more melody driven ideas hinted at on some of the tracks on the album.
The decision to include a local band not normally found at "Christian" events has drawn some press attention for Cheltenham's Pentecost 2000 event. The Chaos Engine, who have been invited as part of the event organisers' attempt to encourage local talent, wouldn't be drawn on their beliefs, saying simply that they "don't believe in following religion blindly" (which hopefully none of us do...). Other artists slated to appear at the event at Cheltenham Racecourse include Delirious?, our current indie of the month skinflowers, World Wide Message Tribe, Urban Militia, and Expanse.
The much delayed new album from the brothers known as Skinflowers is finally completed and will be released as soon as the manufacturing process is finished. While waiting for the album release the band have been getting involved in local politics trying to build up support for a candidate seeking to reopen the Axiom Centre in Cheltenham and increase arts facilities for the younger members of the town's population.
Long-serving indie band Flow are going through some changes, and their future currently looks uncertain. The band decided in February to take a step back and reassess their future direction, and guitarist/songwriter Prod Pritchard has now announced that he intends to leave the group to pursue other interests. The other members are currently considering where to take the band from here.
The new album from Cheltenham-based Skinflowers has been delayed for an extra month. Cheltenham's popular live music venue the Axiom, which was to have hosted the album launch, has closed down and the band have decided to use the extra time afforded by rescheduling the launch to concentrate on polishing the songs further. The album (still as yet untitled) will now release on April 2nd
Cheltenham-based Skinflowersare working hard to meet the 1st March completion date they've set fortheir debut album. A range of tracks are available from their website, with a streaming audio radio-style preview of the album available to thoseusing Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser. The pressure is on tocomplete work on the follow up to the man of blood EP following about of flu which halted work over Christmas.
Flow are settling into their new lineup well and have several gigs coming up. A recent set at the Monarch in Camden saw them trying out some new material and adding the odd keyboard sound and backing track to their sound. The band have shows in Cheltenham and Oxford this week, and are playing next Tuesday in Putney with Bell Jar and Iain Archer.
Iain Archer will be playing live a couple of times in the next month. The first show will be with his new band Brew on the 24th November at London's Kashmir Club, and the second will be a solo set along with Bell Jar and Flow at the Half Moon in Putney.
Oxford/Reading band Flow have a string of live dates coming up over the next couple of months, culminating in a support slot to All Star United in Reading on December 12th. The band have new material and some new electronics to reveal to fans as they continue to seek a record deal.
Flow's showcase last night in Fulham went well. The band are currently looking for a mainstream label to release the album they've been working on with Peter Van Hooke. Several parties have expressed an interest so far.
Reading act Flow will be returning to that town's Alleycat Live on Sunday 18th April. Support will be from a DJ and possibly another band. Admission is only £2.
Flow have been absent from the live scene for the past 16 months but finally made their live debut with new singer Helen at The Jericho in Oxford earlier this month. The band have a couple more live dates coming up in April around London - check the message boards for more details. The band are currently recording a promotional video and continuing to work on their new album (which they hope to release later this year) with former Mike and The Mechanics member Peter Van Hooke. The video is for promotion to record labels rather than distribution or broadcast.
Fabulous indie-popsters Flow have unveiled their new website at: http://www.flowlife.com. Worth checking out just for the "propaganda" section, its also worth looking into the band if you're looking for a hooky indie-pop kinda thing. After some scares about vocalist Helen's voice the band are now back to recording and hope to have something for producer Peter Van Hooke to start pushing to record labels very soon.
Okay, they're not British, but they're my favourite band and their support acts are British. So here are the Vigilantes of Love UK tour dates:
Indie-pop band Flow, who not long ago completed their search for a new vocalist, are currently in the studio working on a new album with a member of Mike And The Mechanics who has apparently been very keen to work with them. Watch this space for more details.
